London – 22nd September 2014 – Last week over 60 PR and advertising agencies gathered to discuss the ‘Future of Tech’ with the staff of TechWeekEurope UK, one of the UK’s most authoritative source for news, features and reviews. Attendees had the opportunity to meet the new editor Duncan MacRae and the new CEO Laurent Delaporte, and say goodbye to outgoing editor Peter Judge.
Laurent Delaporte kicked off proceedings by outlining NetMediaEurope’s unique European and Latin America presence. Laurent also outlined plans to invest in technology to deliver new services to enhance the reader experience. This will include a redesign of all the publisher’s B2B sites to incorporate responsive design, an HTML5 applet, new personalised accounts, and new categories throughout the site, as well as a dynamic recommendations and trend suggestions capability. Plans are also underway to deliver more thought leadership material as well as new reader engagement programmes. These programmes will deliver more creative high impact formats to enhance display awareness and increase demand generation opportunities through advertising and innovative lead generation programmes.
Outgoing editor Peter Judge and the new editor Duncan MacRae then presented their vision of the future of tech. Peter Judge first reminded the audience of the technology landscape five years ago where the iPhone was still in its infancy, Nokia led the smartphone market, Oracle had announced its plans to acquire Sun Microsystems and Big Data and The Internet of Things were unheard of. Fast forward five years from now and Duncan questions whether Apple will start to become more of a niche player. Profits for the technology giant have been up and down in the past 12 months with Apple increasingly facing stiff competition. Duncan admitted that although iPhone sales have held up reasonably well, sales of IPads are down.
He questioned whether we will start to see more standards around areas like the Internet of Things as society becomes more and more connected. Currently there are six groups involved in helping to set standards in this area and Duncan predicted that in the future it is likely that one standards group will take over. Duncan then talked about how often new versions of Windows are likely to be released and whether we will start to see shorter release cycles. Duncan felt that this was highly unlikely and if anything Windows releases will probably start to slowdown. Other trends on the horizon were also discussed.
